Prof. Jonathan Oyebamiji Babalola
Jonathan Oyebamiji BABALOLA is a Professor of Chemistry and the Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Nigeria. He was the Pioneer Provost of the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan (2018-2022) and the Chairman of the Committee of Provosts and Deans of the Postgraduate Colleges and Schools in Nigerian Universities (2019-2021). He had earlier served as Dean (2017-2018) and Sub-Dean (Sciences) (2010-2014) of the Postgraduate School. He served as Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) (2008-2010) and Sub-Dean (Physical) (2000-2002) of the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan. He got his PhD from University of Ibadan in 1999 and then did Postdoctoral studies at University of Parma, Italy (2003-2004) and University of Bonn, Germany (2004-2005).
He is a Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Science and the Public Affairs Secretary of the Academy. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and Chemical Society of Nigeria. He is an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) fellow and a German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD) Scholar. He was a Regular and later Senior Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy (2004-2011, 2017-2023). He was a Pilot Associate of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapon, The Hague, The Netherlands. He is a Justice of the Peace of Oyo State, Nigeria.
Prof. Babalola has made significant contributions to knowledge in hemoglobin reactivities, lipid transfer and membrane fusion, lipid nanodiscs, electrochemistry, electrocatalysis and adsorption. He has published more than a hundred and forty publications in peer-reviewed journals and books. He has supervised 18 Ph.D theses in addition to many M.Sc. research projects.
He has been external examiner to many universities in Nigeria and abroad. He has also assessed publications for promotion to Professorial grade in many Nigerian and foreign Universities. He is happily married to Mrs Olufunmilayo Ayobami Babalola and the marriage is blessed with four children, two boys and two girls.
